REAL SHAPES

How to create a word cloud inside a shape

A real mask keeps every letter inside the chosen silhouette. It gives a more consistent result than simply drawing an outline around the words.

Create my word cloud

What a placement mask does

The editor converts a shape into an allowed area and checks each word’s pixels before placing it. Letters cannot cross the boundary or occupy the same space. Changing a circle to a heart, star or Brazil outline therefore rearranges the composition.

The 15 presets use the same vector geometry in thumbnails, placement calculations and export. Brazil’s simplified outline comes from Natural Earth’s public-domain geographic data.

Choose a readable silhouette

Wide areas

Circles, squares and clouds accommodate long terms and extensive lists.

Points and cutouts

Stars, lightning bolts and leaves work better with greater density and smaller words.

Recognizable forms

Hearts, Brazil outlines and speech bubbles communicate an idea before reading.

If the silhouette looks empty, reduce the minimum size, add words or decrease spacing. Avoid very long terms and use strong contrast to keep the shape recognizable.

Prepare a custom image

  1. Prefer a PNG with a transparent background and a simple silhouette.
  2. For JPG, use a dark object on white and adjust the threshold.
  3. Avoid fine details, tiny holes and jagged edges.
  4. Choose “Outside the shape” if you want words around the silhouette.

SVG files are checked to reject scripts, event handlers, external content and incompatible elements. They are then decoded as images; the file’s code is never inserted into the page.

A heart cloud or your own image?

The heart preset suits tributes, team messages and activities about feelings because its silhouette is recognizable even at a small size. Use short words, moderate density and strong contrast to preserve the central notch.

A custom image works best when the shape relates to the subject, such as a project symbol or themed outline. Simplify it first: tiny details leave no room for letters. To fit many terms, use a circle, square or cloud.

Privacy, accessibility and export

Your text stays on your device. Custom images are also decoded locally without being sent to a server, and are discarded when replaced or when the page closes.

A cloud summarizes visually; it does not replace the original content. When publishing, include a text description of the key terms and do not rely on color alone to convey categories. Choose transparent PNG, JPG or vector SVG for your destination.
