INSIDE THE TOOL

What a word cloud generator does with your text

The visualization starts with a simple count, but normalization, filtering and the selection of terms determine whether the result is informative or merely decorative.

Create my word cloud

From sentences to frequencies

The generator identifies words, normalizes differences in capitalization and groups equivalent occurrences. It then orders terms by how often they appear. More frequent words generally occupy more visual space.

When counts are equal, consistent ordering helps keep the result predictable. The analysis limit is applied after counting, preserving the most frequent terms.

What stopwords are for

Articles, pronouns and prepositions occur frequently in almost every text. The common-word filter, also called a stopword filter, removes some of this functional vocabulary so that nouns, verbs and adjectives stand out more.

The filter does not understand your project’s meaning. In research about connecting words or language, those terms may be the subject of study. Compare versions and choose the one that best answers your question.

What each control does

Shape and word count

The mask defines the available area; the number of terms affects density.

Font and spacing

These affect the space occupied by each word and how many words can fit.

Palette and background

These determine contrast and which PNG, JPG or SVG settings suit your final material.

What the cloud cannot show

Frequency does not automatically mean importance. A word may recur because of the question, interview script or participants’ way of speaking. A cloud separates words from context and does not establish causal relationships, sentiment or opinions on its own.

Use the image to ask questions: why does this term recur? Who uses it? In which passages?

A free online word cloud generator

Analysis runs in your browser: your text does not need to be uploaded to generate the composition. Paste content, try variations and download results without signing up. Local processing also applies to shapes you draw or upload as images.

For long texts, start with a shorter word list. Add more terms if the shape still has space and remains easy to read. You can repeat the process without watermarks.
